(Houston, TX- October 1, 2020) Houston Safari Club Foundation (HSCF) and ‘Hunting Matters’ welcomes Carter Smith, Executive Director of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

A native of Central Texas, Smith developed his passion for wildlife and the out-of-doors at a young age while roaming his family’s farm and ranchland interests in Gonzales, Williamson, and Edwards Counties. He has a wildlife management degree from Texas Tech and a master’s degree in conservation biology from Yale University. As a wildlife biologist, he has worked on projects across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

He serves on a number of conservation-related boards and advisory councils, including the Texas Land Trust Council and the Katy Prairie Conservancy. As the past Chairman of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, he currently serves on the Executive Committee of that association and is the former President of the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. He also served as Chair of the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and is a professional member of the Boone & Crockett Club, a lifetime member of the Texas Bighorn Society, the Dallas Safari Club, and the Houston Safari Club.

Smith was named an outstanding alumnus by both Yale University and Texas Tech, and he was honored by the Audubon Society with their Victor Emmanuel Conservation Award, by the Texas Wildlife Association with the Sam Beasom Conservation Leader Award, by the Botanical Research Institute of Texas with the 2016 International Award of Excellence in Conservation, and with the Harvey Weil Professional Conservationist Award. Prior to joining TPWD, Smith worked in conservation for the Katy Prairie Conservancy and the Nature Conservancy of Texas (TNC), where he served as the Texas State Director.

At TPWD, he is responsible for overseeing an agency of 3,300 professionals in 13 different divisions, including Wildlife, Law Enforcement, State Parks, Coastal Fisheries, and Inland Fisheries. Smith has been particularly active in the areas of private lands conservation, the acquisition of additional state parkland and wildlife management areas, securing state funding for state parks, children in nature initiatives, conservation and mitigation initiatives stemming from the Deepwater Horizon incident, and the state’s management response to chronic wasting disease.

Carter, his wife, Stacy, and their son, Ryland, reside in Austin. They remain very active in managing family farm and ranch holdings in Central and North Texas. Smith is also an avid bird and big-game hunter, fisherman, and general all-around outdoors enthusiast.

(Houston, TX- August 24, 2020) Houston Safari Club Foundation (HSCF) announced today that it had received a grant $45,239 from The MidwayUSA Foundation in support of HSCF’s youth and shooting sports education and outreach programs.

The MidwayUSA Foundation has been a long-time supporter of HSCF’s youth programs include the Youth Wildlife Conservation Experience (YWCE) conducted at HSCF’s Annual Worldwide Hunting Expo & Convention. Through this program, HSCF annually hosts hundreds of area high school students for a day of career introductions to outdoor-related professions. HSCF also provides and supports various programs which introduce a new generation of young people to the outdoors. These programs include interactive experiences in the classroom, in the field and on the water. HSCF also provides ongoing support of high school and collegiate competitive shooting teams.

Rob Wallace, Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks, currently oversees policy and personnel for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Parks Service.

In his previous work in the private sector, Wallace was focused on working with ranchers, energy companies, conservationists, and regulators to balance the needs of conservation and energy development in the West. A native of Evanston, Wyoming and graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Wallace’s government experience includes time as both a seasonal ranger and, later in his career, assistant director of Legislative and Congressional Affairs for the National Park Service. He has been chief of staff to U.S. Sen. Wallop (WY-R), Republican staff director of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, and chief of staff to Wyoming Governor Jim Geringer. In the private sector, he led U.S. government relations for GE Energy where he co-chaired the Government Relations Operating Council. The council coordinated the company’s energy advocacy throughout the world.

(Houston, TX- August 13, 2020) Houston Safari Club Foundation (HSCF) and “Hunting Matters” welcomes New York Times Best Selling author and Pulitzer Prize winner, Stephen Hunter.

Stephen Hunter is a New York Times Best Selling author of 20 novels and the retired chief film critic for the Washington Post, where he won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Criticism. In 1968, Hunter Graduated with a degree in Journalism from Medill School at Northwestern. From there, he went on to Military service, becoming one of the guards honored at Arlington National Cemetery. In 1971, using his journalism degree, Hunter became a writer at the Baltimore Sun and was the paper’s first film critic by 1982. From there, he assumed a position with the Washington Post in 1997. Having found his true niche, Hunter became highly successful as a film critic, winning a Pulitzer Prize for his movie criticism and a Distinguished Writing Award with ASNE.

Hunter has penned 27 novels, short stories, and novellas. His “Bob Lee Swagger” character has been featured in 11 novels, including “Point of Impact”, which was adapted for film and TV as “Shooter”. Hunter lives in Baltimore, Maryland.
