Houston Safari Club (HSC) would like to take the opportunity to comment on HBO’s recently-aired feature on the status of the African elephant. The segment aired on “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel”, November 24, 2015.
The piece focused on the declining numbers of African elephants. HSC applauds the investigative work of HBO’s journalists in publicizing international poaching issues facing elephants today and those brave individuals fighting great odds to protect the elephant from poachers. HSC absolutely disagrees that legal, regulated, ethical hunting should be linked with poaching, as a primary reason for the elephant’s declining numbers.

As part of the markup of S. 556, the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act of 2015, The Senate Energy and Natural Resources (ENR) Committee passed permanent FLTFA reauthorization last week. HSC along with seventy-one other conservation groups signed a letter in support of FLTFA reauthorization, which was sent to Senate Leadership and the Senate ENR Committee.
HSC is proud to announce its 2015 Annual Sporting Clays Tournament, scheduled for Thursday, May 7, 2015. The tournament will be held at Greater Houston Gun Club beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Metairie, LA (Conservation Force) – This is a comment on behalf of Conservation Force and a number of its supporting member organizations including Dallas Safari Club, Houston Safari Club, African Safari Club of Florida, Shikar Safari Club International, International Professional Hunters Association and Professional Hunters Association of South Africa.
Conservation Force is among the foremost leaders of and most actively engaged organizations in Africa-wide lion conservation. This has been described in prior comments preceding this pending proposal, which comments in their entirety on the status of the lion throughout Africa are incorporated herein by reference to avoid repetition. We have previously filed voluminous, meticulously referenced comments in the earlier stages of this listing that will not be repeated here.
February 10, 2015 (Houston, TX) – U.S. Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) have introduced the Sportsmen’s Act of 2015. The bipartisan legislative package is designed to promote and protect the hunting and fishing heritage of Americans and expand access to hunting and fishing areas across the United States.
The Sportsmen’s Act of 2015 is supported by members of both parties including original co-sponsors U.S. Sens. Jim Risch (R-ID) and Joe Manchin (D-WV), and U.S. Sens. Deb Fischer (R-NE) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND). In addition to enhancing access opportunities to public lands for hunters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts, the proposed measures address conservation programs and the potential for an expanded outdoor recreation economy. Some areas of note include:
HUNT Act: All federal public land management agencies are directed to identify high-priority federal lands where hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation are permitted but where access is non-existent or significantly restricted, and develop plans to provide access.
HSC has provided a $30,000 grant to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) in support of the Desert Bighorn Sheep, Mule Deer and Desert Pronghorn Restoration Projects.
The HSC grant will be utilized to support the desert bighorn sheep restoration program (monitoring equipment, student monitoring and helicopter capture), as administered by the Borderlands Research Institute (BRI), in partnership with TPWD. Also being funded is the mule deer restoration project and the pronghorn restoration project, specifically relocation, monitoring, predator management and fencing modification to promote survival, production and movement.
