(Houston, TX – May 24, 2024) Houston Safari Club Foundation (HSCF)  is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Professional Hunters’ Association of South Africa (PHASA).

PHASA is the largest association of its kind in the world, with more than three thousand members. PHASA is the only association in South Africa with the core and sole business of serving the professional hunting industry. They continuously work with government at all levels, including the ministerial level, and across a number of departments, to shape the future of the South African hunting industry.

This MOU signifies a collaborative partnership between the organizations with the goals of opening a channel of communication between PHASA and HSCF which will allow HSCF to communicate the state of hunting and conservation in South Africa, on an ongoing basis. The working relationship between PHASA and HSCF will also help raise awareness of the challenges faced by PHASA and its members in regard to legislation, policy, poaching, and conservation in South Africa.

In a joint statement, Mr. Tonie du Bruyn, PHASA President, and Mrs. Ilse Joubert, Chair lady of the Foundation, stated the following:

“Joining forces with HSCF is an esteemed privilege for PHASA and its Foundation, as we collectively champion the preservation and celebration of our hunting heritage. Our commitment extends beyond mere preservation; we are dedicated to actively contributing to conservation efforts through the responsible and sustainable utilization of our renewable natural resources.

Strategic partnerships serve as the cornerstone of our mission, as they unify and amplify the voices of associations and organizations alike. Collaborating with HSCF not only fortifies our existing alliance but also expands our reach, enabling us to educate a broader audience on the merits of scientific-based discourse over emotive rhetoric lacking factual basis.

We eagerly anticipate the myriad of collaborative projects with HSCF that lie ahead, each poised to yield mutual benefits and advance our shared goals. Together, we strive to uphold the integrity of our hunting traditions while fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the crucial role conservation plays in safeguarding our natural world.”

“HSCF is proud to join forces with the PHASA to promote hunting and conservation in South Africa and bring an awareness about PHASA’s efforts to hunters based in the United States,” states Joe Betar, HSCF Executive Director.

About Professional Hunters’ Association of South Africa (PHASA)
PHASA was formed in 1978 by a group of pioneering men — men who became icons in the fields of both hunting and conservation: ‘Uncle Stevie’ Smith, Basie Maartens, Coenraad Vermaak, Norman Deane, Nico van Rooyen, Bill Daly, Gary Kelly, and Bertie Guillaume, to name but a few. The PHASA founders were all true visionaries; firm in their belief that hunting, and the trophy hunting industry, in particular, has a significant role to play in conservation in South Africa. We actively interact with most leading role-players in the professional hunting industry, including international hunting and conservation associations, local and international government agencies and NGOs, other professional hunting associations from around the globe, PH training providers, and local recreational hunting associations. PHASA is recognized, by the government and by these role-players, as the mouthpiece for the South African professional hunting industry.

Kent, a seventh generation Texan (g, g, g, grandfather Emilius Savage landed in TX 1829), grew up on a 2200-acre cow-calf, rice, and row-crop farming operation in Matagorda County. After graduating from Texas A&M University in 1985, Kent worked all his career in sales & marketing, primarily in the livestock production & grain crop industry before starting with Capital Farm Credit in January of 2013. Kent joined Capital Farm Credit as a Relationship Manager where he worked with the corporate marketing team for most of 8 years and then transitioned to more loan production duties.

Kent’s long career in the agriculture industry has given him the opportunity to amass a large network of customers and business affiliates within agriculture, real estate & conservation associations across Texas. He also credits his large network of friends across the entire state for helping him create and grow his relationship sales & lending style.

Kent also understands the importance of preserving the sensitive Texas prairie habitat system and has served on the Wildlife Habitat Federation’s Board of Trustees for the last 7 years, a non-profit organization that provides on-the-ground restoration, management and generational sustainability of prairie habitat for the conservation of soil, water, air, and wildlife.

While growing up on the ranch, he was always ready to go hunting or fishing, either on his family’s land or across Texas, Colorado & Wyoming. Kent has tried to carry that passion on to his own two sons, Parker (27) and Nicholas (25). He currently resides in Sugar Land with his wife Kim where they have lived for the last 30 years, however, they do look forward to moving out to a more rural lifestyle in the future.

Higher Calling Wildlife® is proud to announce the winner of the Tony Houseman Conservation Legacy Award is Grayson Highfield, age 27,  from Cody, WY.

She was presented the award by Higher Calling Wildlife founder Chester Moore at the 2024 Hunt-Fish Podcast Summit at the Warren Ranch Sat. March 23.

“Tony Houseman was a president of the Houston Safari Club Foundation and was an early mentor of mine-the earliest in fact. He saw something in me when I had no real media resume to speak of and helped fuel the early part of my career, “Moore said.

Highfield is a graduate of the 2023 Women Hunt® program of the Wild Sheep Foundation and has worked with the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management and done everything from fire control to interpretive work.

“She’s a real go-getter and has miles and miles of heart. She also has a unique story and a high level of writing talent which she has been using to raise awareness of wildlife conservation, fishing and hunting. If Tony were still alive he would be proud of her,” Moore said.

Moore has stayed in touch with Houseman’s wife Gisela who has supported two Higher Calling Wildlife Expeditions through her philanthropic works.

Highfield said it was a huge honor to be chosen as the 2024 recipient of the Tony Houseman Conservation Legacy Award.

“Chester has become an amazing friend and support system in the short time I’ve known him, and I’m so grateful that he sees within me a drive for the passions we share: writing, the outdoors, wildlife, and stewardship.”

“I’m looking forward to where my future takes me, and excited to discover new opportunities in which I can give back to the Women Hunt program, conservation, and the hunting and angling fields.”

Highfeild noted that Chester’s story of one of Houseman’s last hunts (a green hunt for a rhinoceros) has inspired her.

“This story has allowed me to begin re-defining what it means to be a hunter in my own mind while I simultaneously shape my personal code of hunting ethics (as a very new hunter) and I am so excited to explore new avenues that meet at the dynamic intersection of hunting and conservation,” she said.

Higher Calling Wildlife helps mentor teens facing special challenges such as critical illness, parent loss and other issues to become wildlife conservationists through conservation-centric expeditions.

The 2022 and 2023 expeditions to Colorado were funded in part by grants from the Houston Safari Club Foundation. Reports on these expeditions were published in their Hunter’s Horn magazine.

They are currently raising funds and seeking sponsors for expeditions in Colorado and in the Yellowstone region.
