What Should I Pack for My Hunt with Wanganui Safaris?
Preparing for your New Zealand hunting adventure should be exciting — not stressful. To help make your travel experience smooth and enjoyable, we’ve put together a practical guide covering clothing, gear, firearms, biosecurity requirements, and important travel considerations for your hunt with Wanganui Safaris.
New Zealand offers some of the most breathtaking and diverse hunting terrain in the world, from rolling hill country and native bush to alpine valleys and rugged mountain landscapes. Conditions can change quickly, so packing practical outdoor gear is essential.
Travel Requirements
Many travelers visiting New Zealand do not require a visa for short stays; however, most international guests must complete a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) prior to arrival.
No vaccinations or special immunizations are required for entry into New Zealand.
Please ensure:
- Your passport is valid for travel
- You complete any required NZeTA and traveler declarations before departure
- You review airline baggage and sporting equipment policies in advance
Important NZeTA Notice
Please be aware that there are many unofficial and scam websites advertising New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) applications while charging excessive service fees.
We strongly recommend applying only through the official New Zealand Government website:
Official NZeTA Website:
https://nzeta.immigration.govt.nz/
Applying through the official government portal is simple, secure, and typically far less expensive than using third-party websites.
Recommended Hunting Gear
As laundry services are available during your stay, there is no need to overpack.
We recommend bringing:
- 3–4 sets of comfortable hunting clothing in natural earth-tone colors such as olive, brown, or dark green
- Lightweight hunting layers for warmer conditions
- Warm thermal or fleece layers for cool mornings and evenings
- Waterproof rain jacket and rain pants
- Comfortable, well broken-in hunting boots with good ankle support
- Warm beanie and gloves during colder months
- Socks and undergarments
- Casual clothing for evenings and travel days
Additional Recommended Items
To enhance your hunting experience, we also recommend:
- Binoculars
- Camera or phone for photos
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Small backpack or day pack
- Personal medications and prescriptions
- Rangefinder (optional)
- Power adapters and charging equipment
New Zealand hunting often involves hiking, elevation changes, river crossings, and rapidly changing weather conditions, so quality outdoor gear is highly recommended.
Firearms & Archery Equipment
Guests are welcome to bring their own rifles to New Zealand; however, we generally recommend utilizing rifles provided by Wanganui Safaris whenever possible.
Traveling internationally with firearms can add significant complexity to your journey, and many hotels, lodges, and accommodations throughout New Zealand have restrictions or limitations regarding firearm storage on their premises. Utilizing outfitter-provided rifles allows for a far smoother and more relaxed travel experience, especially for guests planning additional sightseeing or touring before or after their hunt.
If you do plan to bring your own rifle, you will need:
- Valid passport
- Completed New Zealand Visitor Firearms Licence application
- Copy of your flight itinerary
- Invitation-to-hunt letter from Wanganui Safaris
- Firearm details including make, model, serial number, and caliber
Upon arrival, New Zealand Police will inspect your firearm and issue your temporary visitor firearms licence.
We strongly recommend traveling with a quality hard rifle case and confirming airline ammunition allowances prior to departure.
Bow Hunters
Bows and archery equipment are welcome in New Zealand and are generally treated as standard sporting/outdoor equipment. They do not require firearm permits or special declaration processes like rifles do.\
Important Biosecurity Information
New Zealand has some of the strictest biosecurity laws in the world and takes border protection extremely seriously in order to protect its unique environment, agriculture, and wildlife.
Before traveling, please ensure:
- All hunting clothing is thoroughly cleaned
- Boots are completely free of mud, dirt, seeds, and organic material
- Backpacks, gaiters, tripods, and outdoor equipment are cleaned carefully
- No meat, animal products, fresh foods, or undeclared spices are packed in your luggage
Outdoor gear and boots are commonly inspected upon arrival, and failure to properly declare risk items can result in fines or confiscation.
If in doubt — declare it.
Medications & Medical Devices
Most standard prescription medications and personal medical devices are permitted in New Zealand when carried for personal use; however, some controlled medications and substances are restricted.
We recommend:
- Carrying medications in original labeled packaging
- Bringing a copy of your prescription or doctor’s letter for prescription medications
- Reviewing any restricted medications prior to travel, especially controlled substances or medications containing narcotics or stimulants
- Packing only reasonable personal-use quantities
Medical devices such as CPAP machines, mobility aids, and personal health equipment are generally permitted for travelers.
If you are unsure about a medication or medical device, we strongly recommend checking directly with New Zealand Customs before departure.
