Houston Safari Club And Texas Game Warden Association Sponsor Youth Bow Hunt

On the weekend of October 17-18, Houston Safari Club (HSC) and the Texas Game Warden Association (TGWA) sponsored a youth bow hunt in Maverick County. First Point Bowhunting donated their 5,200 acre ranch for the hunt, with Game Wardens Bobby Kana and Vu Nguyen of Galveston County present to host and educate kids on the importance of proper harvesting and processing of game animals.

The hunt was donated to Lonestar Bowhunters Association and a state wide drawing was held to select the hunters; their ages varied from 9 to 14 years old. Many of the hunters selected were first time bow hunters, who have never harvested an animal. The hunters selected were notified in early September, and for the first timers, there was a month long of intense practice to get ready.

During the weekend temperatures reached almost 90 degrees turning bow blinds into sweat boxes, but the kids still had a fantastic time. Four animals were harvested—an 8 point buck, a spike, a doe, and a javelina. Each animal harvested was the first for each young bow hunter. The kids had a great time venturing down to south Texas, with many driving over 5 hours to experience their first bow hunt.

“TGWA is grateful for the continued support of HSC. The grant from HSC allows kids to experience the world of outdoors through hunting and fishing,” stated TPWD Game Warden Vu Nguyen. “In a world of television and video games, many kids from urban areas would not get the opportunity to experience the outdoors without these types of events. Educating the young hunters of the future correctly will ensure that the resources are sustainable for future generations.”
